2018 Party Invitations

The invitations were fun this year, but I only passed out a handful of them, even though I made a bunch of them. My workplace only had like 6 people, and 2 of those were the owners whom I did not give an invitation to (and got a request for one for the next year, even though they wouldn't come lol). Tom probably gave out more than I did to his work associates.

I started by printing my wording on colored cardstock. I was going to burn or paint the edges for some aging or just something to make them look better, but I got lazy with that part. I bought a bunch of fake raven-type feathers on Amazon to make "quills" with. I also bought some copper skeleton key bottle opener keychains to add to them. I just liked the bottle opener keychains, something useful to keep for folks.

I thought I took more photos, but apparently I did not. I'll try to explain the best that I can. I cut the tips off of the feathers and bored out the centers a little more than they already were. They are sort of hollow up to a point. I used a long drill bit and did this by hand VERY carefully so that I didn't poke through the plastic.

I bought a box of really cheap ballpoint pens, and removed the ink part from them. I saved the outer tube part for use later on some hands. ;-)

I had to cut a little bit of the tips of the ink cartridge parts, but you REALLY have to be careful not to cut too much off or they will leak. Then I pushed the ink cartridges up into the hollow quills as far as I could.

I used a dab of hot glue on the ends of the quills to hold the ink cartridge in place. I used some black waxed twine and hot glued one end to the spot where the thick part of the ink cartridge with the ballpoint end is sticking out of the quill, covering that joint, and wrapped it around until I got up about 2.5 inches or so. Then I hot glued the end down.

Now I have a usable "quill" pen. Since I have no caps, I have to be very careful with how they are stored, bottoms down, in a jar or plastic solo cup. I tried to think of a way to make a cap that looks decent with it, but I just couldn't figure it out, so I just left them naked.

I used some thin black waxed necklace twine to tie everything together. They turned out pretty nice, and my guests that actually got them loved them. The rest of our party guests were online invitations, which was basically the scroll but on Facebook. When they came to the house, however, they were all given the keychains on the necklace twine, and we used those for the "forbidden word game". For those who don't know what that is, a word is given to every one at entry that is forbidden to say until the game is over. When another person catches you saying that word, they take your necklace. The person at the end of the time period for the game with the most necklaces wins a prize, in this case it was a bottle of liquor.

We also had a hidden emblem contest, where there was a specific emblem, the Kraken logo, that was hidden somewhere in the house. Whoever found it, won the bottle of Kraken rum.
